Maledives
Big Encounters in a Turquoise Paradise
Over 1,000 coral islands and 26 atolls scattered across the Indian Ocean
White sand beaches and lagoons are one thing, but beneath the surface lies an impressive diversity of large marine life. Whether it’s manta rays, whale sharks, tiger sharks, reef sharks such as silvertip sharks, dolphins, big humphead (Napoleon) wrasse, or massive schools of barracuda – the Maldives are much more than a romantic postcard destination.
Especially along the outer reefs and in the atoll channels, you can expect spectacular drift dives and a fascinating underwater world. Depending on the season, certain regions are particularly active, such as the Ari Atolls for whale sharks or Hanifaru Bay for manta rays.
Diving from island resorts or liveaboards gives you access to remote and less-dived spots, all tailored to your preferences.

Why the Maledives?
The Maldives are one of the best places in the world for regular encounters with whale sharks, manta rays, and a wide variety of sharks. Due to their exposed location in the open ocean, strong currents form in the atoll channels – a magnet for large marine animals.
At the same time, the Maldives offer a unique experience of barefoot island vibes, turquoise-clear water, remote dive sites, and comfortable conditions, whether from a boat or a resort.
With Mālama Earthventures, you’ll find the exact route or island that suits your dive level, marine life preferences, and travel style.

Best Time to Travel
Diving is possible year-round, but experiences and routes vary by season:
December to May (Northeast Monsoon):
calm seas, excellent visibility, great drift diving – ideal for southern atolls such as Ari, Vaavu, Felidhoo, Fuvahmulah (tiger sharks)
June to November (Southwest Monsoon):
more plankton, more manta and whale shark action – especially in northern atolls such as Baa and North Male
We’ll advise you on whether a resort, a safari, or a combination is ideal for you – always tailored to your dive level, marine life goals, and travel month.
